Eine außergewöhnlich seltene tibetische Thangka des Medizin-Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) aus dem 18. bzw. - Distemper auf Baumwolle, Seide - Tibet - Qing Dynastie (1644-1911)
An exceptionally rare and spiritually potent Tibetan Thangka depicting the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) surrounded by the Eight Great Stupas (Eight Sugata Stupas), dating to the late 18th to early 19th Century (Qing Dynasty).
The central deity, Bhaisajyaguru, is beautifully rendered with a deep lapis lazuli/navy blue skin tone, sitting in vadrasana (lotus position) upon a multi-colored lotus throne. His serene face is flanked by elongated earlobes, and his head topped with a prominent ushnisha. In his left hand, resting in his lap, he holds a medicinal bowl filled with long-life ambrosia and curative herbs, while his right hand rests on his knee in the varada mudra (gesture of granting wishes), gently clasping a sprig of the Myrobalan (訶梨勒) plant, the supreme healer of all physical and mental afflictions.
A magnificent and uncommon feature of this specific Thangka is the meticulous inclusion of the Eight Great Stupas symmetrically arranged on either side of the Medicine Buddha. Each white stupa, finely outlined with delicate gold and white pigments, commemorates a pivotal event in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha.
The celestial realm above features three seated deities, including a high-ranking lineage master/lama in a pandit hat and an Amitabha/Avalokiteshvara manifestation. The terrestrial realm below is guarded by fierce, wrathful protector deities enveloped in blazing halos of wisdom fire, stomping out spiritual obstacles and illness.
Painted with authentic natural mineral pigments (including cinnabar red, malachite green, and azurite blue) on cotton, the canvas displays a magnificent, untouched historical patina, honest age-related cranquelure, and faint traces of incense smoke from decades of monastic devotion and ritual veneration. The Thangka has been beautifully preserved and expertly presented in a modern, western-style conservation mount with a refined grey silk matboard, making it immediately ready for framing and display in a premier collection of Asian art.
