Niederlande, Utrecht Zilveren Rijder (Ducaton) 1742
Silver Ducaton – Province of Utrecht – 1742
A scarce silver ducaton struck in 1742 at the Utrecht Mint for the Province of Utrecht, one of the seven sovereign provinces of the Dutch Republic. Ducatons were among the most important high-value silver trade coins of the United Provinces, renowned for their reliable weight and high silver fineness, allowing them to circulate extensively across Europe and throughout the Dutch colonial trading network. The obverse features the traditional armoured horseman holding a raised sword, symbolizing the military strength and independence of the Republic, above the crowned provincial coat of arms of Utrecht. The reverse bears the crowned arms of the Dutch Republic supported by two heraldic lions and surrounded by the customary Latin legend. Unlike many surviving Utrecht ducatons of this period, this example does not originate from the famous Hollandia shipwreck, making it a considerably scarcer collector’s piece outside the well-known shipwreck provenance. The coin displays attractive original surfaces with strong detail and natural cabinet toning, representing an increasingly difficult issue to acquire in this state of preservation.
