08. ACCA VF+, Southern Dynasties - Emperor Wu of Liang, Official Female Coin, Rare + Eastern Han Dynasty Wuzhu Coin (Two coins photographed together)
The Official Female Coin was an official currency minted by Emperor Wu of Liang (Xiao Yan) during the Tianjian era (502-519 AD) of the Southern Dynasties to alleviate financial pressure. It is a variant of the Wuzhu coin system. It is thin and small, without an outer rim, and the inscription on the obverse is the two characters "Wuzhu" in seal script. It is made of bronze. Because it was officially minted, it was called "Official Coin"; because it was light and thin, it was called "Female Coin". This coin circulated alongside the Liang Wuzhu coin. According to the *Book of Sui*, Emperor Wu of Liang "minted it separately, removing the outer rim, and called it Female Coin". Coin specimens unearthed at the Xiao Liang minting site in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, confirm that it was a product of the official weight reduction policy. The Eastern Han Dynasty Wu Zhu coin, with its narrower rim and bronze color, was minted in 25 AD after Liu Xiu proclaimed himself emperor and established the Guangwu era. The character "五" (five) features curved strokes, the top of the character "朱" (red) is rounded, the vertical stroke in the middle is thinner at both ends, and the four dots of the character "金" (gold) are elongated. Emperor Wu of Han implemented six currency reforms during his reign, finally resolving the monetary problems that had plagued the early Han Dynasty. Therefore, the Eastern Han Dynasty Wu Zhu coin holds significant historical importance. This set of coins is quite rare; collectors should not miss it.
