MOERIS - Open-face 15-jewel sub-seconds presentation - 1950-1959
Introduction
A Swiss-made Moeris open-face pocket watch with a clean silvered dial, bold Arabic numerals, blued-steel spade hands, and a subsidiary seconds register at the lower centre. The manual-winding movement, signed 'MOERIS / 15 JEWELS / SWISS MADE', sits behind a nickel case stamped 'SKS FINE NICKEL'. The caseback carries a deeply engraved Japanese dedication reading: 包象寅先生留年 / 東京中華学校 / 全体教職員謹贈 / 1950.7.20 — presented on 20 July 1950 to Teacher Bao Xiangyin on the occasion of his tenure, a gift from all the teaching staff of the Tokyo Chinese School.
Historical / Era context
Moeris was a Swiss ebauche manufacturer based in St-Imier, active from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, supplying movements to a wide range of Swiss and export-market watchmakers. The 15-jewel grade housed here represents a solid mid-tier quality, appropriate for a presentation timepiece. The engraved dedication dates this watch precisely to 20 July 1950, when it was gifted by the entire teaching staff of the Tokyo Chinese School (東京中華学校) to Teacher Bao Xiangyin — a rare and touching piece of post-war Sino-Japanese educational history preserved on the caseback.
Condition
The watch is running at the time of listing.
Case: The nickel case shows light surface scratches and minor handling marks consistent with its age, but retains a good overall polish with no major dents or deformation. The presentation engraving on the caseback is crisp and fully legible. The inside of the caseback is stamped 'SKS FINE NICKEL M20224' and carries a handwritten service notation in red ink.
Dial: The silvered dial is legible with the Moeris signature and Arabic numerals all clearly readable. There is some light patina and minor age-related toning across the surface, consistent with a piece of this era. No chips or cracks are visible.
Crystal: The crystal shows visible scratches; I note the crystal is marked — please examine the photos carefully.
Movement: The movement is running well. The manual-winding action functions as expected. The movement plate is marked 'SWISS MADE / MOERIS / 15 JEWELS' and reference '17B' is visible on the plate.
Accessories: No chain, box, or papers are included. Sold as shown.
Please review all photographs carefully for the detailed condition.
