Constantine Cavafyis one of the most important poets of modern Greece and perhaps the best known and most widely translated Greek poet abroad. He was born in Alexandria and lived in the cosmopolitan environment of that city, which, both then and during the Hellenistic period, was a crossroads of civilizations.
He wrote relatively few and short poems, which he revised meticulously again and again. He used restrained expressive means and usually free verse, distancing himself from the poetic conventions of his time. His style is distinctly personal, and his language is unique, moving between katharevousa and demotic Greek. The hallmarks of his poetry are dramatic intensity, irony, sensuality, and philosophical reflection, often inspired by historical figures and events.
The cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) is a true giant of the skies, with a wingspan that reaches nearly three meters. It is one of the rarest and most endangered birds of prey in Greece. The only population in the country (and one of just two in the Balkans) is found in Evros, centered in the Dadia Forest, where 29–35 pairs nest. It builds its enormous nest in the crowns of large, mature pine trees, and each pair raises one single chick each year. It is one of the four vulture species found in Europe and feeds exclusively on animal carcasses, mainly those of large mammals. The most significant threats to the cinereous vulture are poisoning (due to the illegal use of poisoned baits), collisions and loss of vital habitat resulting from the development of energy infrastructure (wind turbines, power transmission lines), as well as forest fires.
Vassilis Tsitsanis, a leading composer, lyricist, virtuoso bouzouki player and singer, and one of the most important figures of 20th-century Greek popular music, was born in Trikala in 1915.
He created hundreds of songs that spread throughout Greece through the recordings of the era, as well as through his live performances at legendary music venues such as Charama in Kaisariani, where he never ceased to offer “magical nights” to an audience that adored him.
Tsitsanis brought Greek popular song out of the margins, renewing both its form and interpretation. He elevated the bouzouki—until then a marginalized and even prohibited instrument—to the leading role within the popular orchestra, combining it with Western instruments such as the accordion.
In 1980, at the initiative of UNESCO, the double album entitled “Charama” was released, featuring Tsitsanis performing a series of his classic songs along with numerous improvisational bouzouki pieces. In 1985, following his death, the French edition of the album was honored with the Music Academy Charles Cros Award.
Generations of Greeks have grown up with his songs, which authentically express the sorrows and hopes of the people. As he himself once said:
“Whatever I feel, I turn into lyrics, I set to music, I give life and wings to, with my bouzouki and baglamas. The lyrics and the notes are expressions of my soul. They are my very life; they are the life of all people, with its sorrows and its joys.”
