Eugenios Spatharis (1924–2009) was the great master of Greek shadow theatre and the son of the renowned Karagiozis performer Sotiris Spatharis. Beginning during the years of the German occupation of Greece, he continued throughout his life to give countless performances both in Greece and abroad. Eugenios Spatharis played a decisive role in making shadow theatre beloved by audiences of all ages and establishing it as a distinguished art form that offers both entertainment and education.
Thanks to his recordings and later television broadcasts, his performances reached every Greek household and shaped generations of children, helping the art of shadow theatre survive into the modern era of contemporary media. Spatharis enriched the traditional repertoire with new comic, historical, and mythological themes and adapted ancient tragedies and comedies, as well as the Odyssey and Erotokritos.
He was a multifaceted talent: an important folk painter, as well as a stage designer, costume designer, and director in theatrical adaptations of Karagiozis. The intellectual legacy of the Spatharis family is preserved and continued by the Spathario Museum, founded by Eugenios in Marousi.
