A striking and highly decorative German Art Deco tobacco jar or humidor, dating from the early 1930s. Manufactured by Iso-Press of Berlin from Taumalit, a distinctive molded Bakelite. The rich translucent reddish-brown marbled finish beautifully imitates tortoiseshell and exotic wood grain. The bold geometric design is typical of the Machine Age and Art Deco period, featuring architectural fluting, textured panels and strong streamlined forms. The removable screw-top lid closes securely and was designed to help preserve the moisture and aroma of tobacco. During the 1920s and 1930s, new synthetic materials such as Bakelite and other phenolic resins revolutionised European industrial design. Their ability to be molded into strong geometric forms made them particularly suited to the modern Art Deco and Machine Age aesthetic. A rare and impressive collector’s piece in near-mint condition.
