Roman Bronze Crossbow Fibula – 1st to 3rd Century AD A substantial Roman bronze fibula distinguished by its strongly arched bow, broad transverse head and three prominent spherical terminals. The curved body is carefully modelled with raised collars and moulded details, while the surviving pin and catchplate preserve the original fastening mechanism. Its solid construction and balanced proportions give the piece a particularly imposing appearance. Fibulae of this type were used to secure garments and could also communicate rank, status or military association within Roman society. The pronounced crossbar and decorative terminals anticipate the more developed crossbow fibulae of Late Antiquity, although the overall form remains consistent with Roman Imperial production of the 1st to 3rd Century AD. The surface displays a dark green archaeological patina with lighter mineral deposits and areas of natural wear.
