Yousuf Karsh (Canadian, 1908-2002) - Pier Angeli, 1962

Pier Angeli, 1962, gelatin silver print, agency stamps and typewriter label (verso). Karsh archive no. 11997 In good condition, with a few creases and corner bumps. Please check the scans for details. Yousuf Karsh (1908–2002) was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer celebrated for some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Working mainly in Ottawa, he became famous for his dramatic lighting and psychologically intense style, photographing figures such as Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, Audrey Hepburn, and Pablo Casals. His 1941 portrait of Churchill, taken just after the British leader’s speech to the Canadian Parliament, became one of the most widely reproduced photographic portraits in history. Karsh’s work combined technical precision with a strong sense of character, helping define modern photographic portraiture. Today, he remains one of the best-known masters of 20th-century photography. Pier Angeli (1932–1971) was an Italian film actress who rose to international fame in the early 1950s for her beauty, emotional sensitivity, and luminous screen presence. Born Anna Maria Pierangeli in Cagliari, Sardinia, she made her breakthrough in Teresa (1951), winning a Golden Globe, and went on to appear in both Hollywood and European productions, including The Story of Three Loves (1953), The Silver Chalice (1954), and Sodom and Gomorrah (1962). Though often cast in romantic and tragic roles, Angeli brought a distinctive mixture of innocence and melancholy to the screen. Today, she is remembered as one of the most striking and poignant actresses of postwar cinema.
