The Safari Chair was designed by Danish architect Kaare Klint in 1933 and has been a design gem from day one. As one of the first "build yourself" pieces of furniture, distinctive and lightweight, the Safari Chair's functionality is undeniable: The chair can be easily assembled and disassembled - without the use of tools. In the early 1930s, an American film photographer and his wife went on safari in Africa. On the trip, they brought some chairs whose design was based on Indian Roorkhee chairs. When Kaare Klint saw the pictures from the couple's safari trip, he also saw the chairs, and he was inspired to design his own version. This Safari Chair's frame is made of elm wood, treated with dark stain. The seat, the back and the arm straps are made of leather. The chair is sold including a cushion. The markings on both of these particular chairs: “DENMARK 30473” is the classic date code used on Kaare Klint furniture made by Rud. Rasmussen in the 1960s and 1970s. The code reads as: 30 4 73 → April 30, 1973 This dating method is well documented from the Rud. Rasmussen workshop on furniture designed by Kaare Klint, including the Safari Chair. This means: * Genuine Klint Safari Chair * Produced by Rud. Rasmussen * Precisely dated to April 30, 1973 * From the classic hand-crafted production period This is considered a very desirable production year, because it is: old enough to be true vintage, yet modern enough to be structurally robust for everyday use. The fact, that it can be dated to a specific day, is unusual and highly attractive to collectors. Kaare Jensen Klint is a good example of one of the few who could do it all: He was a visual artist and architect, but especially a high-level furniture designer. Klint started his career as a student of architect Carl Petersen and his own father, P. V. Jensen Klint. Here he learned in particular about the Danish tradition of classical realism, as seen in, for example, Bindesbøll. In 1924, Klint became professor of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts at the School of Furniture Design, where he had been employed in 1923. Here he spread his ideas about design, which greatly influenced an entire generation of furniture designers. Some of Kaare Klint's original and best-known works include the Church Chair, the Armchair and here, the Safari Chair. As in all his other works, there is a strong focus on using only the best materials, which should be manufactured with the finest workmanship. Klint had an eye for practicality, where he always thought about the dimensions and movements of the body in order to ensure that his furniture was not only beautiful to look at, but also provided an excellent sitting experience. Through all this, he created much, the class of which can be seen, among other things, in the fact that it is still produced today. Kaare Klint was never attracted to Bauhaus functionalism or Art Nouveau. These styles went against his preference for practicality and quiet dignity, whereas Art Nouveau works are often bombastic without any thought for convenience.
