Zyprisch Terracotta Zweifarbiges linsenförmiges Gefäß - 11 cm
Handmade lentoid terracotta vessel with a short, slightly flaring neck and two opposing strap handles. The light buff fabric is decorated with dark brown to black geometric painted ornamentation. Encircling bands decorate the neck, while the body is divided by multiple zigzag motifs, angular patterns, and vertical linear elements. The well-balanced shape and carefully executed geometric decoration are characteristic of Cypriot Bichrome Ware of the Iron Age.
Small lentoid vessels of this type were commonly used for storing and transporting valuable liquids such as perfumed oils, ointments, or cosmetics. They are frequently found in Cypriot burials, where they formed part of the funerary assemblage, but they were also used in everyday life.
Well preserved. One handle with a small loss. Age-related surface wear with minor abrasion to the painted decoration. Small chips to the rim and base. Overall in an authentic state of preservation with the geometric decoration remaining clearly visible.
Provenance:
Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the owners' extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. Documented in Germany by 1970 and subsequently retained in continuous family ownership.
