Mask - Nepal - 1970-1980 - Bemalte Mahakala-Maske
The local Nepali craftsmen independently carved a whole piece of hardwood and hand-painted with natural mineral pigments to create the folk mask of Mahakala (Mahaykala), a Dharma protector, and strictly followed the Tibetan Buddhist statue rituals.
The mask is made of a whole piece of log and is carved into a three-dimensional deep relief, completely carving out the protector's iconic majestic appearance: the third eye of wisdom standing on the forehead, the glaring eyes wide open, the mouth wide and sharp teeth, with curling cloud pattern eyebrows and spirally decorated big ears; the five skull crown on the head is the core symbol, which means to eliminate the five poisons of greed, anger, ignorance, pride and doubt. All colors are layered and colored by hand using traditional Tibetan mineral raw materials. The main body is red, the gold pattern is decorated, and the bone-white skull is matched with black edges. The color is thick and simple, and the thin varnish on the surface seals the painting for a long time to avoid weathering and fading. The facial features, skulls, and patterns are all hand-shaped and colored.
In Tibetan culture, the red-bodied Mahakala is a powerful protector who protects the house, wards off evil spirits, eliminates disasters and diseases, and resolves obstacles and disputes. This old wood carving has high color painting integrity and no defects or defects.
