Michael Joseph (1941-) - Rooftop ménage à trois (with four statuettes and a parrot!)

Ménage à Trois – Rooftop Conservatory Bath Scene, London, 1960 Authentic sepia-toned darkroom print by Michael Joseph Few photographers could orchestrate theatrical chaos quite like Michael Joseph. Long before elaborate advertising tableaux became his trademark, Joseph was already constructing surreal, cinematic worlds where every object seemed to play a part. Here, a seemingly intimate bath becomes an extraordinary stage set perched high above London, inside the glass-roofed conservatory of his West Central Street studio. At its heart, a man and woman recline beneath a mountain of bubbles, exchanging conspiratorial glances that leave the viewer wondering exactly what has unfolded - or what is about to. Behind them, a second woman pauses quietly amongst the foliage, wrapped in patterned fabric, her presence transforming an ordinary romantic scene into something far more enigmatic. Is she leaving? Arriving? Simply observing? Michael Joseph never tells us. Around the bath, four marble cherubs appear as silent spectators, while ornate stained glass floods the conservatory with soft light. And then comes one of the photograph's most delightful discoveries: perched discreetly to one side is a white parrot, calmly observing the entire affair with almost comic detachment. It is exactly the kind of wonderfully unexpected detail that rewards a second, third and fourth look. The image balances humour, elegance and gentle provocation with remarkable ease. Every element - the classical statuary, tropical plants, Victorian architecture, luxuriant bubbles and the quietly watchful bird - contributes to a composition that feels simultaneously theatrical and completely believable. Rather than documenting a moment, Joseph invites us into an invented world where reality and fantasy comfortably coexist. Hand printed in the photographer's darkroom and signed in pencil, this is an authentic vintage sepia print from Michael Joseph's archive. Condition Presented in its original chrome-effect mount measuring approximately 50 × 40 cm. As expected for an authentic vintage darkroom print of this age, there are a few minor age-related characteristics, including: a light handling crease visible in the upper area of the print; a handful of tiny sepia toner drips or spotting marks, likely acquired during the original darkroom toning process; light surface wear consistent with careful storage over many decades. These small imperfections do not detract from the image and instead speak to its handmade darkroom origins and authenticity. The print will be carefully packed and dispatched promptly via Colissimo. #MichaelJoseph #VintagePhotography #DarkroomPrint #SilverGelatinPrint #SepiaPrint #SignedPhotography #FineArtPhotography #SurrealPhotography #VintageLondon #CollectorsEdition #PhotographyCollectors #MidCenturyPhotography #DarkroomMagic #ParrotArt #OneOfAKind
