Icon 20th century, approx. 26,9 x 31,9 x 2 cm, wooden panel. The Tree of Jesse icon illustrates the genealogy of Jesus Christ, inspired by the prophecy of Isaiah: “A shoot shall come forth from the stump of Jesse.” At the base of the composition lies Jesse, the father of King David, from whom a flourishing tree grows. Its branches bear Old Testament kings, prophets, and righteous ancestors of Christ, while the upper part is crowned by the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child or by Christ in glory. The icon expresses the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy through the Incarnation and emphasizes the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. Widely developed in Byzantine and later Russian iconography from the eleventh and twelfth centuries onward, this image symbolizes God's plan of salvation and the lineage leading to the coming of the Messiah. The icon is in very good condition.
