This muscular giant bust of Hercules was sculpted using the realistic anthropomorphic technique pioneered by the sculptor Critius. He was the son of Zeus and a mortal, born with unparalleled divine strength. Driven mad by Hera's persistent curse, he murdered his wife and children. Following divine instructions, he completed twelve trials forbidden to mortals—slaying the invulnerable Nemean Lion and the nine-headed serpent, capturing the three-headed dog of the underworld, and vanquishing ferocious beasts and tyrants throughout the land, enduring immense physical and mental suffering. In his later years, his body was corroded by a poisonous cloak, and he ultimately immolated himself on a mountaintop, shedding his mortal form and ascending to Mount Olympus to become an immortal god.
