These prints are usually identical to the regular edition but are often considered more valuable because of their rarity and their closeness to the artist's hand. They are usually marked with the abbreviation E.A. (épreuve d’artiste) or AP (artist's proof) and may be numbered in Roman or Arabic numerals. Artist proofs are especially sought after by collectors because they are rare and of high quality, sometimes slightly different from the final version, making them unique or nearly unique pieces.
