There's a kind of quiet two people only reach after years together. not the absence of things to say, but the comfort of not needing to say them. That's what I wanted to hold here. Two faces turned slightly toward each other, neither looking directly at the viewer, caught in a stillness that belongs only to them. Even the cat has stopped watching us and started watching them. I built the faces the way Cézanne once taught color to carry form, plane against plane, no outline, just the honest edge where one color ends and another begins. Cubism gave me permission to show both of them from more than one angle at once, the way you actually know someone after enough time: never just one face, always several, held together. And then the metal leaf gilding, worked in with hand carved spirals, the way an older tradition once treated ornament as something worth kneeling over.
