According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990's. Background Information: This cast bronze fibula dates to the 1st–2nd century AD and is formed in the shape of a swastika, an ancient solar and protective symbol that was widely used throughout the Roman world long before its modern appropriation. In antiquity, the swastika symbolised good fortune, prosperity, eternity, and the cyclical movement of the sun, appearing on jewellery, mosaics, military equipment, pottery, and personal ornaments. The brooch is decorated with concentric ring-and-dot motifs, a characteristic decorative technique frequently employed on Roman bronze dress accessories. Originally fitted with a pin mechanism on the reverse, it served both as a functional garment fastener and as a decorative personal ornament.
