Hammadah al Hamra 346 (“Ghadamis”) – L6 Individual with Nearly Complete Fusion Crust and Fine Craquelure Offered here is a particularly attractive, uncut individual of Hammadah al Hamra 346, an officially classified L6 chondrite from Libya. The outstanding feature of this meteorite is its nearly complete, deep-black fusion crust. It formed during the high-speed passage through Earth’s atmosphere, when the outermost layer of the stone briefly melted before rapidly solidifying into a thin, dark crust. Across the matte surface runs an exceptionally fine, web-like craquelure pattern. Countless delicate lines form a natural, often polygonal network, giving the meteorite remarkable depth and visual detail. Depending on the angle and lighting, new structures continually become visible—almost like a cosmic mosaic. It is precisely this combination of nearly complete black fusion crust, fine crustal cracking and a natural, uncut form that makes Hammadah al Hamra 346 such an aesthetic and immediately recognisable collector’s specimen. The material has been officially classified as L6, S5 and W0. The S5 shock stage shows that the rock was exposed to powerful collisions and extreme pressures on its parent asteroid. The W0 weathering grade, meanwhile, documents the meteorite’s remarkably fresh condition following its arrival on Earth. Its discovery history is equally fascinating. On 26 August 2018, a large fireball was seen and heard above the Jabal al Gharbi region of Libya. Shortly afterwards, numerous exceptionally fresh meteorites with dark fusion crust were discovered in the same region. A connection with the observed event is considered possible, although it has not been conclusively confirmed. The material is also known in the meteorite trade as “Ghadamis.” This meteorite therefore combines everything that makes a high-quality individual so desirable: an authentic natural form, an exceptionally well-preserved atmospheric surface and a fascinating cosmic history.
