- In ancient Egypt, wine was a luxury item, unlike beer, which was a more common beverage among the people. Consumed by the elite as early as the Old Kingdom (approx. 2600–2100 B.C.), it gradually became more widespread during the New Kingdom (1500–1000 B.C.). Wine, due to its intoxicating properties, was also closely associated with celebrations held in honor of Hathor. Amulets shaped like bunches of grapes were often part of larger jewelry pieces. This example, in fact, has an eyelet at the top that allowed its owner to thread a cord through it.
