Bettwäsche im späten 19. Jahrhundert, Richelieu, mit den Initialen M.C. - Stoff - 3.2 cm - 2.2 cm

This exceptional Richelieu cutwork bed sheet dates from the late 19th century (circa 1885) and is a magnificent example of the extraordinary craftsmanship for which French household linens of this period are renowned. Richelieu cutwork is a traditional embroidery technique in which sections of the fabric are carefully cut away and reinforced with intricate needlework. Satin stitch, trailing stitch and other decorative stitches are combined to create elegant openwork patterns of remarkable refinement. The sheet is further embellished with bourdon embroidery (raised hemstitching), a technique used to produce a beautifully defined finish on fine bed and table linens. Such meticulous handwork required countless hours of skilled labour, making pieces of this quality increasingly rare. This sheet comes from a château where most of my finest antique linens originate. It has spent the majority of its life carefully stored and was only rarely used. Its provenance is particularly well documented. The château's inventory ledger, in which every purchase and every piece produced by the estate's sewing atelier was meticulously recorded, allows us to date this sheet to approximately 1885. It originally adorned the bed of the present owner's great-grandmother. The current owner, now 85 years old, has preserved both the family history and the estate archives, making the provenance especially compelling. The beautifully executed Richelieu monogram, featuring the intertwined initials M, J and C (Marie, Jean and Catherina), is exceptionally rare on bed linen. Creating flowing monograms in Richelieu cutwork demanded remarkable precision and patience, and relatively few examples were ever produced. The monogram is framed by an elegant spray of hand-embroidered flowers. Along the upper border are three rows of ajours (drawn-thread openwork). The upper two rows are enriched with five sprays of openwork flowers and foliage, while larger floral sprays decorate each corner. The embroidery continues approximately 90 cm (35½ inches) down each side, creating a beautifully balanced composition. Above the openwork runs a delicate series of half-garlands composed of small embroidered medallions, providing an exquisitely refined finishing touch. This is a rare and outstanding example of late 19th-century French château linen, combining documented provenance, exceptional workmanship and timeless elegance. It fully deserves to be cherished and appreciated once again. CONDITION. Please note the following restoration. At one point, while the sheet was hanging outdoors to dry, it was unfortunately "grignoté" ("nibbled") by a stray dog that had gained access to my property. As a result, my experienced couturière removed approximately 1.20 metres (47 inches) from the lower end of the sheet and expertly replaced it with a matching section, joined using an English blind seam. Please refer to the final two photographs. The replacement has been executed to an exceptionally high standard and blends beautifully with the original linen without detracting from the overall beauty or presentation of the piece. And of course the seam will not show as it is at the bottom of the bed and covered by a blanket. For this reason, I confidently describe the sheet as being in excellent antique condition, while wishing to be completely transparent about the restoration. Please read this description carefully and examine the photographs before bidding.
