The Canon EF, produced from 1973 to 1978, is the odd one out among Canon's FD-mount bodies: an electronically governed shutter-priority SLR built around a Copal Square vertical-travel metal shutter rather than the cloth shutters of its F-1 and FTb siblings. That shutter gives it an unusually wide range, with electronically timed speeds running all the way to a full 30 seconds — a capability no other manual-focus Canon offered — while the fast speeds from 1/2 to 1/1000 stay mechanically timed and work even with dead batteries. Its silicon photocell meter was among the most responsive of the period, and the heavy, densely built body earned it the nickname 'the black beauty' among collectors.
