This exceptionally large Soviet presentation desk medal was issued for the South Scientific Production Bureau of Electroinstrumentation of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, an institution closely associated with scientific research and advanced electronic engineering in Mykolaiv (formerly Nikolaev), one of the Soviet Union’s principal shipbuilding and industrial centers. Struck in a substantial 120 mm format and preserved in its original presentation case, the medal displays the bureau’s emblem on the obverse and the historic symbols of Mykolaiv on the reverse. Its remarkable size, excellent state of preservation and highly specialized institutional theme distinguish it from the far more common Soviet commemorative medals. Such large presentation pieces were typically produced in limited quantities for official ceremonies, delegations or distinguished personnel, making them considerably scarcer than standard issues.
