Pete Best is a British musician best known as the original drummer of The Beatles during the band's early years. He joined the group in 1960 and played alongside John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their formative period, including their famous performances in clubs in Hamburg, Germany, and at Liverpool's Cavern Club.
Best remained with The Beatles until August 1962, shortly before the band achieved worldwide fame. He was dismissed from the group and replaced by Ringo Starr. Best therefore did not play on the Beatles' major hit records, although he participated in early recording sessions, including the band's audition for Decca Records and their first session at EMI's Abbey Road Studios.
After leaving The Beatles, Best continued performing with several bands before eventually stepping away from the music business. Decades later, his early recordings with the group were released on The Beatles Anthology 1 (1995), bringing him renewed recognition and significant royalties. As the drummer who was part of The Beatles immediately before their breakthrough, Pete Best remains an important figure in the history of one of the world's most famous bands.
