A Patinated Metal Animalier Model of a Recumbent Hound, circa 1900 A substantial patinated cast metal model of a recumbent hound, dating from around 1900 and conceived in the tradition of the European Animalier movement. The dog is naturalistically modelled lying curled upon a deeply cushioned base, its head resting between its extended forepaws. Particular attention has been given to the expressive face, long folded ears, muzzle and carefully defined paws, reflecting the Animalier interest in naturalistic and characterful representations of animals. The cushioned base is equally well modelled, with deep folds, gathered edges and an irregular surface suggesting the weight of the animal resting upon the fabric. The sculptural treatment gives the relatively compact piece a strong sense of volume and presence. The whole is finished with a rich dark brown patinated surface. Natural rubbing to some of the raised areas reveals the warm golden-toned metal beneath, creating an attractive contrast and emphasising the modelling. Measuring approximately 18 × 17 × 12 cm and weighing approximately 2 kg, the model is notably substantial for its size. The piece remains in good antique condition, with rubbing, surface marks, scratches and variations to the patination consistent with age and use. The base is lined with green felt.
