Photography, foliage and forty years of history meet in this unique, sun-made work.
Created by Michael Joseph’s daughter from one of his original archive negatives, this cyanotype reimagines his Now in Tubs advertising photograph more than four decades later.
The image is printed on a surviving sheet of vintage photographic paper from Michael Joseph’s own library. Its discolourations, stains, small creases and surface irregularities have deliberately been retained: paper, process and patina become part of the picture.
Contact-printed in sunlight using the nineteenth-century cyanotype process, the pale central figure is surrounded by hand-painted Prussian blue and delicate impressions of real fern fronds. The result moves between figure and foliage, photograph and painting, past and present.
Sunlight, chemistry and the ageing photographic surface create shifting tones of Prussian blue, cyan and turquoise, making this piece impossible to reproduce exactly.
The reverse, bearing Justine Joseph’s studio label, also reveals the paper’s considerable signs of age and previous life. Rather than being restored or concealed, these traces form part of the work’s provenance — an original material from Michael Joseph’s photographic world given a new life by his daughter.

Mein Vater, Michael Joseph, war von Mitte der 1960er bis Anfang der 1990er Jahre ein in London ansässiger Werbefotograf.
In diesen Jahrzehnten schuf er eine außergewöhnliche Werkschau – sein bekanntestes Bild ist das ikonische Gatefold von Beggars Banquet der Rolling Stones.
Meine fortlaufende Mission ist es, zu teilen und zu feiern, was wir „die anderen Fotos“ nennen: die weniger bekannten, aber nicht minder fesselnden Bilder aus seinem Archiv.
Das sind Werke, die jenseits der Schlagzeilen entstanden sind — Testabzüge, alternative Aufnahmen aus großen Shootings und ruhigere, persönlichere Fotografien, alle mit seiner charakteristischen Intensität, Disziplin und Hingabe zum Handwerk gefertigt.
Viel von ihrer Atmosphäre resultiert aus dem Dunkelkammerraum selbst. Das sind Fotografien, geformt durch Licht, Timing und Handarbeit: komplexe Gruppenkompositionen, skulpturale Stillleben und Momente, die den Betrachter einladen, zu verweilen und erneut zu betrachten.
Vielfalt ist dem Archiv zentral, und ich biete regelmäßig einzigartige Einzelstücke an, die nirgendwo anders existieren.
