Al-Salih Ismaʿil was a son of al-Nasir Muhammad and ruled the Mamluk Sultanate during the succession struggles following his father’s death. His short reign brought a measure of stability to a state dominated by powerful military commanders. From Cairo, the sultanate governed Egypt and Syria, where provincial mints such as Aleppo produced copper coins for everyday trade.
