THE ARCHITECTURE OF DISTANCE, 75 × 110 cm The painting constructs its space through large vertical fields of colour that both organise the composition and establish boundaries between two figures. The man remains distant, almost reduced to a silhouette, while the woman appears closer, partially concealed by a narrow architectural plane. It remains uncertain whether they inhabit the same interior or merely two adjacent realities. Distance becomes more than a physical measure: it may suggest disconnection, memory, emotional tension, or the impossibility of crossing an invisible boundary. Navy blue, flesh tone, muted pink and deep burgundy create a space that is both physical and psychological. The contrast between the cool, dark plane, the flesh-toned centre and the saturated burgundy intensifies the sense of distance, division and tension between the figures. Architecture is not merely a background. It becomes an active force: dividing, concealing, directing the gaze and defining the relationship between presence and absence, proximity and distance. THE ARCHITECTURE OF DISTANCE continues Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz’s exploration of the imagined interior as a psychological space — a place that is not so much depicted as sensed. It is a unique, original painting by the artist. The painting is varnished, which enhances the depth of colour and protects the surface. It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The painted edges of the canvas allow the work to be displayed without a frame. A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist is included. About the Artist: Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz is a visual artist holding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts and Design, working across painting, collage, photography, and spatial projects. Her practice explores the relationship between the human figure and architectural space, operating at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. Her works are characterised by restrained compositions, geometric structures, and subtle tensions between colour, space, and presence. Oleszkiewicz’s artistic research focuses on the figure as a carrier of psychological states within constructed or fragmented environments. Rather than narrative depiction, her paintings investigate perception, distance, and the quiet dynamics between bodies and space. Education Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Faculty of Interior Architecture and Scenography, additionally attending elective courses in Painting and Graphic Arts during her master’s studies. She also studied Interior Architecture and Exhibition Design at the Sopot Academy of Applied Sciences in Sopot. She further expanded her practice by participating in the Photography / Film Workshop “Power” at the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School, University of Silesia in Katowice. She has also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Faculty of Architecture of Cultural Spaces. Her work has been presented in numerous international exhibitions and curated artistic projects in both gallery and institutional contexts. These include presentations at the Centre for Contemporary Art and ZPAP in Toruń, the International Graphic Biennale in Skopje, and the Prague Quadrennial, as well as exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Rome, Venice and Padua. Oleszkiewicz’s paintings are held in private collections across Europe and Asia, including Belgium, Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, China, Spain and Greece. She maintains an active international practice, with a strong presence on European art platforms, particularly within the Belgian and German markets. She has collaborated with Alternative Culture Studio, Academicon Publishing House, Dziennik Bałtycki, and various cultural institutions and media.
