Franklin Mint 1:16 – 1905 Rolls-Royce 10 HP “Little Sue” – B11UM58 – 24-Carat Gold-Plated Details – Original Box – Mint Condition
1. Model Description
Offered here is the exceptionally detailed Franklin Mint 1905 Rolls-Royce 10 HP, traditionally known as “Little Sue”, in the large and impressive 1:16 scale.
Franklin Mint reference: B11UM58 / UM58
The model is finished in a rich dark green with contrasting black seating, fine red coachlines and numerous decorative components plated with 24-carat gold.
This is one of Franklin Mint’s particularly elaborate early-motoring models. According to the accompanying documentation, the precision model was assembled from more than 100 individual components, hand-painted and finished by hand.
Its features include:
- Large 1:16 scale
- Detailed die-cast metal construction
- Dark green bodywork
- Fine contrasting coachlines
- Components plated with 24-carat gold
- Detailed radiator surround and Rolls-Royce emblem
- Gold-plated headlamp surrounds and period lanterns
- Genuine leather-style upholstered seating
- Detailed dashboard and controls
- Side-mounted gear and brake levers
- Detailed steering mechanism
- Spoked wheels with rubber tyres
- Reproduced suspension and chassis components
- Detailed two-cylinder engine compartment
- Period registration number SU 13
- Franklin Mint identification markings
The model is in mint collector’s condition and appears exceptionally well preserved. Its delicate decorative components, paintwork and gold-plated details present beautifully.
It is supplied in its original Franklin Mint cardboard box with the original moulded Styrofoam packaging. The model also comes with the illustrated German-language certificate shown in the photographs.
The outer cardboard box has visible age- and storage-related wear, including creases, marks, handwritten notes and traces of adhesive tape. This affects the packaging only; the model itself is in mint condition.
Important note concerning the scale:
The original cardboard box and Franklin Mint reference B11UM58 identify this model as the large 1:16-scale version. The accompanying German certificate states 1:24. This appears to be an incorrect or mismatched scale designation on the certificate. The model offered here is the Franklin Mint B11UM58 version in 1:16 scale.
The photographs form an essential part of the description and condition report. Please inspect all images carefully before bidding.
2. Rolls-Royce and the Original 10 HP
The Rolls-Royce 10 HP occupies a particularly important place in motoring history. It was the first automobile produced under the Rolls-Royce name following the agreement between engineer Henry Royce and automobile dealer Charles Stewart Rolls in December 1904.
The earliest Rolls-Royce automobiles were presented to the public at the Paris Motor Show in December 1904. Their refinement, precise engineering and unusually quiet operation helped establish the reputation that Rolls-Royce would later express through the famous description:
“The Best Car in the World.”
The original 10 HP was powered by a two-cylinder engine of approximately 1.8 litres, combined with a three-speed transmission. Production was extremely limited, with only a small number of examples manufactured.
Important characteristics of the original automobile included:
- Two-cylinder engine
- Approximately 1.8-litre displacement
- Three-speed transmission
- Separate chassis construction
- Period coachbuilt bodywork
- Side-mounted gear and brake controls
- Large artillery-style wheels
- Distinctive Rolls-Royce radiator design
The design of the radiator grille established a visual feature that would remain closely associated with Rolls-Royce automobiles for generations.
Franklin Mint recreated this historic automobile as an unusually large and highly detailed collector’s model. The 1:16 scale allows the mechanical components, controls, seating and delicate exterior fittings to be reproduced with considerably more detail than on conventional 1:24 models.
The dark green B11UM58 edition is particularly attractive because of its combination of deep green bodywork, black seating and numerous gold-plated details.
3. Shipping
The model will be packed with exceptional care.
It will first be secured inside its original moulded Franklin Mint Styrofoam packaging. The original packaging will then be placed inside a sturdy additional outer shipping carton with sufficient cushioning material.
The historic Franklin Mint box will therefore not be used directly as the shipping container.
Shipping will be:
- Insured with DHL
- Provided with online tracking
- Carefully and securely packed
- Protected by an additional outer carton
Special attention will be given to the delicate lamps, steering wheel, control levers, windscreen, radiator fittings, mudguards and gold-plated components.
Because this is a large and finely detailed collector’s model, careful packaging is particularly important.
In the unlikely event of transport damage, the buyer is requested to photograph the unopened parcel, shipping label, outer packaging, inner packaging and damaged item before disposing of any packaging material and to report the matter promptly through Catawiki.
