Portugal. 20 Reis | 1833 | D. Maria II | Vintém Ducal | Rare

Rare Portuguese 20 Réis, popularly known as the “Vintém Ducal”, dated 1833 and belonging to the historic Lóios series of Queen Maria II. This remarkable copper issue was struck in Porto during the Siege of Porto (1832–1833), at a temporary mint established at the former Convent of Santo Elói, from which the name “Lóios” derives. The 20 Réis is one of the scarcer circulating denominations of the Lóios series, and the exact number of pieces produced is not known. It is catalogued as **Alberto Gomes M2 06.01 and KM#400. OBVERSE: The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field and divide the date 18 – 33. Around the design is the Latin legend: MARIA.II.D.G.PORT.ET.ALG.REGINA meaning Maria II, by the Grace of God, Queen of Portugal and the Algarves. REVERSE: A prominent crown is placed within a decorative wreath. Below appears the denomination: 20 with the Latin legend: UTILITATI O PUBLICÆ referring to the purpose of the coinage for public utility. The distinctive crowned design is responsible for the popular name “Ducal” or “Vintém Ducal”. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: The year 1833 was a decisive moment in Portuguese history. During the Liberal Wars, Porto was held by the forces supporting the constitutional cause of Maria II and was subjected to a prolonged siege by the Miguelist forces. Because normal monetary production was disrupted, a temporary mint was established in Porto at the former Convent of Santo Elói. The resulting coinage became known as the Lóios series. The 20 Réis “Ducal” was one of the denominations that actually entered circulation. In contrast, the 5 and 10 Réis pieces of the same 1833 series are generally regarded as patterns or trials rather than regular circulating coins. The issue has become particularly notable among collectors of Portuguese nineteenth-century coinage because of its historical connection with the **Siege of Porto** and its scarcity on the market.
