Victorian silver-mounted gentleman’s walking cane, London 1886 A Victorian gentleman’s walking cane with a substantial sterling silver pommel, finely engraved to the top with an elaborate intertwined monogram within scrolling foliate decoration. The silver mount is fully hallmarked for London 1886, with maker’s mark for Ebenezer Newman & Co. The pommel is mounted on a rich reddish-brown polished wooden shaft displaying attractive natural tiger-stripe figuring along the grain. Ebenezer Newman & Co. were specialist London makers of silver mounts for walking sticks, umbrellas and similar gentleman’s accessories, active from the 1880s. The silver shows surface wear, small dents and scratches consistent with age and use. The wooden shaft retains an attractive warm patina with age-related marks and wear. The ferrule is no longer present, with wear and loss visible to the lower end of the shaft.
