Automaten - 1920-1930, 1970-1980 - Vintage Mechanical Automa

Vintage Mechanical Automaton Box (19th Century) Object Name: Fine wood box featuring a musical automaton and a three-dimensional rotating figure. Period / Style: Circa 1860–1880, Central Europe (high-end manufacture of Swiss or French origin, characteristic of the Second Empire / Late Victorian era). Metrological Data and Technical Specifications: • Length: 7.5 cm • Width (Depth): 5.5 cm • Height: 4.8 cm (including the support assembly) • Total weight: 188.0 grams • Mechanical condition: Fully functional (complete original mechanism, intact gear train, springs and speed governor in optimal operating condition). Description and Analysis of Fine Materials: • 1. Scenographic Compartment (Horizontal): The interior scene is fully clad in an original sheet of genuine tortoiseshell, selected for its unique reflective properties and amber-like translucency. Embedded in its center is a precious metal (gold/fine brass) heraldic plaque, hand-engraved with the calligraphic double monogram "A.B.". • 2. Pictorial Decoration and Lid Optics: The top of the box features an authentic, hand-painted miniature (with fine brushstrokes visible at macro scale—a mark of exclusivity distinguishing it from raster-based or printed technologies). The scene is a Rococo-style pastoral-gallant composition, bearing the handwritten signature "Boucher." The artwork is protected by a domed (*bombé*) crystal glass lens, secured by a hand-scalloped brass bezel. • 3. Acoustic Screen and Resonance Grille: Beneath the lid lies a protective screen made of fine silver foil (or a dense period alloy) featuring an embossed finish. It displays microscopic geometric perforations and cutouts with heraldic motifs (trefoils and fleurs-de-lis) that serve as acoustic vents, allowing sound waves to escape without distortion. • 4. Cabinetry and Structural Elements: The exterior casing is clad in fine walnut or thuja burl veneer, notable for its sinuous natural knots. The piece rests on four spherical cast-brass feet, designed to provide structural isolation and acoustic amplification. It opens via a discreet pneumatic system operated by a front-mounted push-button. Mechanism Dynamics and Condition: • Automaton System: The piece houses a finely sculpted anthropomorphic figurine (a ballerina) posed in a classic, dynamic stance. The piece is fully detachable from the central drive pivot—a technical feature exclusive to items commissioned from high-precision workshops. • Kinematics: A single lateral brass lever controls the entire gear train; engaging it simultaneously releases the musical cylinder and the vertical axis, producing choreographed pirouettes perfectly synchronized with the melody. • Technical Note Regarding the Winding Key: The lot includes the original key, featuring the historic split-socket design for base winding. Due to natural wear on the elastic steel slots, the key exhibits some geometric play on the shaft. The mechanism itself remains intact; adjusting the key socket requires only a standard, minute tightening of the chuck—a minor conservation procedure. Investment Profile and Provenance: An exceptional museum-quality specimen representing the pinnacle of the European micro-mechanical golden age. Given the impeccable condition of the tortoiseshell casing and the superb preservation of the painted decoration, this lot constitutes a significant asset, ideally suited for elite private collections or fine horology museums.
