Schildorientierter H-Chondrit mit Fließlinien - 53 g

A 53 gram oriented, shield-shaped individual of an unclassified likely H-chondrite, preserving a well-developed fusion crust and several characteristic atmospheric-entry features. The specimen exhibits clearly defined flow lines across its fusion crust, recording the movement of molten material over the surface during atmospheric ablation. A small roll-over lip is also present along the trailing edge, providing further evidence of the stone's orientation during atmospheric flight. The shield-like morphology is particularly characteristic of an oriented meteorite: the relatively broad leading face experienced sustained ablation while the surrounding material was progressively sculpted by the high-temperature flow of the atmosphere. The specimen is unclassified, but its mineralogical and physical characteristics are consistent with an H-group ordinary chondrite. H chondrites are characterised by relatively high total iron compared with L and LL chondrites, with much of the iron occurring as Fe-Ni metal and sulfide. As this specimen has not undergone formal classification, the H-chondrite designation should be regarded as likely (based on its strong magnetic response). The exterior preserves several features that are of particular interest in an oriented meteorite: Flow lines produced by the movement of molten surface material during ablation Shield-like oriented morphology A distinct roll-over lip along part of the trailing edge The roll-over lip is especially useful for establishing the specimen's orientation. During atmospheric entry, the high-temperature boundary layer causes progressive melting and displacement of material from the leading surface towards the sides and trailing regions of the stone, where it can accumulate as a raised lip. I am a member of the Meteoritical Society (#7743) and the Global Meteorite Association (#G0129) and have been collecting meteorites for over 16 years.

The exterior preserves several features that are of particular interest in an oriented meteorite:

Flow lines produced by the movement of molten surface material during ablation
Shield-like oriented morphology
A distinct roll-over lip along part of the trailing edge

The roll-over lip is especially useful for establishing the specimen's orientation. During atmospheric entry, the high-temperature boundary layer causes progressive melting and displacement of material from the leading surface towards the sides and trailing regions of the stone, where it can accumulate as a raised lip.
