Paar traditioneller zentralasiatischer Reitgerten - Holz, Leder, Metall - Zentralasien - 20. Jahrhundert

A finely decorated pair of traditional Central Asian riding crops, attributed to the 20th century, probably the mid-century period, approximately 1940–1980. Both pieces feature individually turned wooden shafts, intricate silver-coloured metal wirework, decorative metal fittings, and shaped leather tips embellished with multicoloured geometric lacing. Riding crops and whips have long formed part of the equestrian and pastoral traditions of Central Asia, where horses played an important role in transportation, herding, hunting and everyday life. Beyond their practical purpose, such implements were often decorated with elaborate woodwork, metal ornamentation and leather craftsmanship, reflecting regional traditions and the personal preferences of their owners. The construction and ornamentation of this pair show similarities to traditional riding equipment associated with Central Asian cultures, including Turkmen and neighbouring equestrian traditions. Their precise geographical origin remains unconfirmed, as does whether they were intended primarily for horse or camel riding. Both crops feature carefully turned wooden shafts, embellished with flowing, interlaced motifs executed in fine silver-coloured metal wirework, apparently inlaid into the wood. Narrow metal bands divide the shafts into decorative sections, some secured with small visible nails or rivets. The handles terminate in rounded metal capped pommels featuring engraved radial patterns and ornamental detailing. Although closely related in construction, the two handles display individual differences. One features a series of pronounced turned wooden rings and a broad metal-banded pommel, while the other has a more elongated profile with small decorative metal studs and finely engraved circular motifs. Both handles retain their leather wrist loops, threaded through openings in the wood. The shaped leather tips are particularly attractive. Their elongated, flattened forms terminate in pointed ends and are decorated with carefully arranged geometric patterns in cream, red and pale green. The ornamentation appears to consist of narrow strips of coloured leather or rawhide threaded through the surface, creating distinctive zigzag borders and small cross-shaped motifs. The leather sections are firm enough to retain their shape while remaining slightly flexible, consistent with the construction of traditional riding crops. Despite their close resemblance, the two pieces display subtle variations in their woodturning, metalwork and decorative leather lacing, highlighting their individual handcrafted character. - Condition: Both pieces are in good vintage condition, displaying natural signs of age and use, including surface scratches, an established wooden patina, tarnishing of the metal fittings and ageing of the leather. The leather tips remain securely attached to their respective wooden shafts, with no apparent separation at the connections. However, both leather sections show localised areas of weakness at existing bending and creasing points. These areas appear consistent with repeated folding or prolonged storage in a bent position by a previous owner. Although the leather remains generally firm and retains some flexibility, the weakened areas should be handled carefully to prevent further deterioration. The darker leather tip shows more pronounced surface wear and discolouration, while the lighter example is generally better preserved. The decorative leather lacing remains largely intact, with minor age-related wear. Both leather wrist loops are present. The crops are offered as historical and decorative collectibles and have not been tested for practical riding use. - Dimensions: Larger crop: - Length: 57 cm - Maximum width: 3.5 cm - Maximum depth: 3.5 cm Smaller crop: - Length: 56 cm - Maximum width: 3 cm - Maximum depth: 3 cm Combined weight: 233 g Both pieces will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking.

Their precise geographical origin remains unconfirmed, as does whether they were intended primarily for horse or camel riding.
