Derthona by Vigneti Massa is an iconic, representative white wine, crafted by the true pioneer of the Timorasso grape in Italy. It is rare for a single grape variety to become so closely identified with one winemaker; when this happens, it signifies a true standard bearer someone capable of revitalizing and championing an entire region. This is precisely the case with Walter Massa, Timorasso, and the Colli Tortonesi. A charismatic figure with a profound understanding of his vineyards and land, Walter took the reins of his family’s winery in the 1970s. He steered local viticulture in a radical new direction, prioritizing indigenous varieties, limiting yields, and minimizing vineyard treatments. Above all, he recognized the immense potential of Timorasso, elevating it to become the premier white grape of the area. His wines ranging from deep, terroir driven reds to long-lived whites are genuine pieces of Italian wine history, essential additions to any enthusiast’s cellar.

The wine, named "Derthona," takes its title from one of the most celebrated vineyard sites (cru) dedicated to Timorasso; Walter’s version is a pure, unadulterated expression of this variety. In the vineyard, as noted, the approach is one of minimal intervention a philosophy that continues in the cellar, where alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously and the wine is aged on its fine lees.

In the glass, Derthona by Vigneti Massa reveals a medium intensity straw yellow hue. The nose is expansive and rich, featuring distinct notes of acacia honey, flint, and white flowers a profile that weaves together a fleshy, substantial character with delicate mineral nuances. On the palate, it is full bodied with a creamy texture, perfectly balanced between its substantial richness and a saline quality that significantly extends the wine’s persistence.
