Han Zhuan (漢磚壺) Duanni Yixing Teapot
China, early to mid-20th century
A finely crafted Yixing zisha teapot in the architectural Han Zhuan (漢磚壺), or “Han Brick,” form, characterised by its angular, four-sided body, geometric handle and straight rectangular spout. Made from pale yellow-buff duanni clay (段泥), the design reflects the literati appreciation of archaic forms and ancient Chinese bricks and tiles.
The body bears a hand-incised inscription in Chinese regular script:
昔日山中土,一邱变成百菓兴。偏幽若逢醉醒,长思啜每到吟余。着意求志远。
“What was once earth in the mountains of old is transformed within this mound, bringing forth the flourishing of a hundred fruits. In secluded quietude, it seems to restore clarity upon awakening from intoxication. Whenever my verses are finished, I long to sip tea, setting my thoughts upon distant and noble aspirations.”
The inscription evokes the transformation of raw Yixing clay into a refined tea vessel and the contemplative pleasures of tea drinking in the scholarly tradition.
The recessed base is particularly distinctive, impressed with a pattern of six ancient-style Chinese cash coins, with round forms and square central holes, interspersed with seal-like motifs. This antiquarian decoration reflects the enduring literati interest in ancient Chinese numismatics and archaic designs. The handle base is stamped 申錫 (Shen Xi).
