Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 799 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This bronze finger ring is distinguished by its broad oval bezel engraved with six ring-and-dot motifs arranged around the perimeter. The ring-and-dot pattern is one of the most recognisable decorative devices of the Roman world and appears on jewellery, military fittings, horse harness equipment, furniture mounts, and domestic objects throughout the Empire. Besides its decorative appeal, the motif is widely regarded as having an apotropaic, or protective, significance, intended to avert misfortune or the evil eye. Finger rings formed an essential part of Roman personal adornment and were worn by men and women alike. Examples with geometric ornamentation such as this were suitable for everyday use while also reflecting contemporary artistic traditions. The carefully engraved circular motifs created a striking visual effect using simple geometric forms, demonstrating the Roman preference for balanced and symbolic decoration. The ring was cast in bronze using established Roman metalworking techniques before the bezel was finished by hand and decorated with precisely incised ring-and-dot circles. Similar rings have been recovered from settlements, military forts, villas, and cemeteries throughout Britain, Gaul, Germania, and the Danubian provinces, illustrating the widespread popularity of this decorative style during the Roman Imperial period. Dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D., the ring belongs to a period when bronze jewellery was mass-produced in specialised workshops and distributed across the Empire through extensive trade networks. Its decoration reflects both Roman craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of geometric protective symbols in everyday life. This piece provides a direct and tangible connection to the ancient Roman world, where rings of this type combined personal adornment with traditional symbolic motifs and accompanied their owners in daily life."
