53. ACCA XF, Late Qing to Early Republic - Zhengde Tongbao decorative coin, double dragons playing with a pearl on the back, large 53mm, rare:
Coins like the "Zhengde Tongbao" were usually made for luck, to ward off evil, or for collection. Their cultural meaning is linked to wealth accumulation and good fortune. There’s a folk saying, "Zhengde thrives, the world is peaceful; Zhengde coin, wear it for good luck." People believed that wearing or collecting Zhengde coins could ward off evil, ensure safety, and attract wealth and good luck. As a result, from the late Ming dynasty to the late Qing and early Republic, people made various decorative Zhengde coins. These were not used as regular currency; they are known as "peace-protecting coins" (decorative coins), mainly for appreciation, prayer, home protection, or offering, not official government-issued money. The front is inscribed with the four characters "Zhengde Tongbao" in a neat style, with a standard square hole. The back features the classic "double dragons playing with a pearl" design, where the dragons coil around the hole, symbolizing auspiciousness and nobility. This is a rare, large, and beautiful decorative coin in recent years.
