In the midst of the quartz crisis of the 1980s, Breitling designed a special mechanical watch for the pilots of the Italian Air Force's aerobatic squadron, "Frecce Tricolori." The raised bezel lugs (rider tabs), developed for use even with gloves, became the model's signature.
