Rappresentazione della Vergine dormiente (Dormitio Virginis) con angeli e santi.
Icona originale russa del XIX secolo, dipinta con tempera all'uovo su tavola con colori simbolici 
che esprimono spiritualità e con inserti in foglia d'oro su aureole e decorazioni. Rifinita con olio 
siccativo. 
Il tema della Dormitio, uno dei più solenni del calendario liturgico ortodosso, rappresenta la morte 
terrena della Vergine in attesa dell’assunzione gloriosa in cielo. Al centro della composizione la 
Madonna giace sul letto funebre, circondata dagli Apostoli. Sopra di lei Cristo, circondato da 
un’aura luminosa, accoglie tra le braccia l’anima della Madre, rappresentata come una bambina in 
fasce bianche. Sullo sfondo due angeli dalle ali dorate e architetture antiche delle città sante di 
Gerusalemme e Costantinopoli. Le dorature luminose e le tonalità calde dei panneggi trasmettono 
un’immagine di pace e serenità. Questa icona russa nel suo particolare formato orizzontale, raro 
nella Dormitio, si configura come un'opera devozionale d'interesse per esperti di arte sacra alla 
ricerca di una sintesi tra arte e spiritualità.
Provenienza: località rurale di Markovka (Ucraina) nel 1942 durante la II Guerra Mondiale.
