Pair of shokudai 燭台 (candlesticks) - Lacquered wood, Metal - Japan - Mid to late Shôwa period (mid to late 20th century)
A pair of tall temple candlesticks 燭台 (shokudai), finished in gilded lacquer and fitted with shaped metal appliqués along the column, decorated with a repeating diaper pattern.
These candlesticks were traditionally used in Buddhist temples. Each example features a long fluted column rising from a chrysanthemum-shaped, arched foot, and is surmounted by a smaller bowl-shaped head fitted with a metal candle pricket.
Period: Japan – Mid to late Shôwa period (mid to late 20th century)

Height 78 cm, Diameter 19.3 cm
In fair condition, with clear traces of age and use, including lacquer loss and restorations. One column is fastened with nails from an old repair, and the candle prickets bowls appear to be of a later date. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
