Description from the seller

Museum-Quality Japanese Tea Ceremony Bowl (Chawan) - Rare Nezumi Shino with Dramatic Kairagi Glaze & Signed Wooden Box

A Truly Exceptional and Luxury Item.

This is an extraordinary and magnificent example of a Japanese Tea Bowl (Chawan) crafted in the highly esteemed Shino ware tradition (Shino-yaki), one of the most celebrated styles of Mino ceramics. It is a genuine one-of-a-kind artistic piece, embodying the quintessential wabi-sabi aesthetic of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu).

Key Features & Craftsmanship:

Style: Nezumi Shino (Gray Shino). The potter masterfully applied an iron-rich slip (oni-ita) before coating the entire bowl with a thick, creamy white feldspar glaze. During the firing process, the glaze shrank dramatically, resulting in its most distinguishing feature.

Glaze Texture (Kairagi): The surface exhibits a breathtaking, craggy texture known as Kairagi (梅花皮, literally "plum blossom skin" or "shark skin"). This desirable and rare effect is caused by the thick glaze contracting and splitting to expose the reddish-brown iron-rich clay body below in a powerful, dynamic network of lines. The result is a tactile, powerful, and deeply expressive texture that makes the bowl truly unique.

Aesthetics: The bowl possesses a robust, hand-formed shape with an irregular, undulating rim. The interplay between the milky white glaze, the dark iron network, and the hints of rusty color creates a profound sense of antiquity and drama.

Provenance: The bowl is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (Tomobako), which bears the inscription "Nezumi Shino Chawan" (鼠志野茶碗) and the artist's signature (likely from the Shino/Mino tradition). This signed box guarantees the piece's authenticity and high status.

This is not merely a tea bowl; it is a sculptural work of art and an heirloom piece that represents the pinnacle of Japanese pottery.
