Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with nihon shishû 日本刺繍 (Japanese embroidery) - Wood, Silk, Paper, Embroidery - Japan - Taishô to early Shôwa period (Early/Mid-20th century)

A beautiful and rare tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) decorated with a colourful collection of sensu 扇子 (folding fans) scattered across a flowing stream, crafted from pieces of silk partially adorned with nihon shishû 日本刺繍 (Japanese embroidery). The open fans each display a different artistic motif: floral and auspicious patterns, a delicate kachôga 花鳥画 (bird-and-flower painting), and even a lively genre scene of Edo-period daily life. They are placed on a paper ground painted with turbulent white waves, interspersed with square fragments of silk, each lavishly decorated with its own scene. The result is a striking and vibrant composition, rich in colour and detail. Encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective metal fittings. Period: Japan – Taishô to early Shôwa period (Early/Mid-20th century) Dimensions: Total width 189 cm (2 × 94.5 cm); Height 174.2 cm. In a very good condition with only minimal traces consistent with age on both sides. Small repapered patch reverse. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
