Description:
The Hamayil is an ornamental object traditionally used in the Ottoman period for religious and spiritual purposes. It typically contains verses from the Qur'an, prayers, or talismans (muska) and is worn around the neck. These items were believed to offer personal protection and also served as decorative jewelry, showcasing fine craftsmanship.
The Hamayil was not only a physical adornment but also a spiritual safeguard. It was believed that the sacred texts or prayers enclosed within had the power to protect the wearer from harm. Moreover, it served as a symbol of the individual’s faith, devotion, and cultural identity within Ottoman society.
This piece is an example of a handcrafted silver amulet (hamayil) produced using traditional techniques. The body is designed in a form inspired by mosque architecture, featuring a four-minaret composition that conveys symbolic and architectural unity.
Within the amulet’s inner chamber, there is a container in the form of a sleeve and rolled insert, intended for the preservation of prayer texts. The silver hallmark located on the lower section serves as verification of the metal’s authenticity and fineness. The accompanying chain is of the woven (braided) chain type, created by interlacing metal wires, and is entirely crafted from silver.
