Description from the seller
Blue Krishna Figure in Polychrome Carved Mango Wood, Tamil Nadu, India, 20th Century
Hand-carved and painted wooden sculpture from Tamil Nadu, India, made in mango wood and dating to the 20th century. The figure represents Krishna in a dancing posture, identifiable by the blue complexion and iconographic attributes held in multiple hands, standing on a lotus-form base.
This work reflects South Indian devotional carving traditions, where dynamic movement and ornamental detailing are emphasized. The balanced composition, rhythmic stance, and vivid polychrome surface create a strong visual presence, suitable for collectors of Indian religious sculpture and ethnographic art.
Condition is good overall for age and material. Visible wear to painted surface, minor paint losses, abrasions, and age-related cracks to the wood are present. A stable old crack is visible on the rear halo, and the base underside shows wear and an opening typical of aged wood construction. The structure remains stable.
The value is supported by its scale, hand-carved execution, preserved original polychromy, and clear regional characteristics. It is a representative example of Tamil Nadu wooden Krishna figures, where expressive gesture and saturated color are central elements.
