National flag of Iraq
The flag of Iraq has had a different appearance several times since the founding of the modern country (1921).
1921-1959
Kingdom of Iraq (under British mandate, later gaining independence)

Black and white - green horizontally, with a red triangle in the corner.
This was derived from the Arab Spring flag.
1959-1964
After the fall of the monarchy and the revolution of 1958.
New flag: black-white-green horizontal stripes, with a red star in the center.
Symbolized Kurds and Arabs
Briefly used under the First Republic
1963-1991
Ba áth party seized power
The flag looked similar to that of the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria).
Horizontal red-white-black with three green stars in the middle.
This stood for Unity, Freedom, Socialism.
1991-2004
During the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein added the text 'Allahu Akbar' among the stars, in his own handwriting.
2004-2008
After Saddam's fall, the inscription remained, but the script was changed to a standard Arabic font; the stars remained.
2008-present
The current flag: red-white-black, with only the text 'Allahu Akbar' in green Kufic letters (stars removed).
