Ishô'dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) - Kiri (Paulownia) wood, Hinoki (Cypress) wood, Iron - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

A striking, heavy and wide wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections, showcasing decorative iron hardware. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan. The drawer faces and sides are crafted from indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood, and the top of hinoki (cypress) wood. The whole is finished in a warm brown hue we refer to as ‘golden oak’, with a rich aged patina. The upper section comprises three, and the lower section two spacious full-width drawers. Each is adorned with large circular lock plates topped with butterfly 蝶 (chô)-shaped lock slides, paired with sturdy iron mokkô 木瓜 (melon)-shaped bail handles set on elongated escutcheons. The drawers are further embellished with floral protective plates above and below the handles. The sides are fitted with n-shaped pole-carrying handles for ease of transport and to secure the upper section in place. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912) Dimensions: Height 126.6 cm (T 64.6 cm, B 62 cm), Width 115.4 cm, Depth 45.2 cm The ishô’dansu is in a very good restored condition with subtle signs of age and use. One butterfly lock slide is slightly loose. No key included. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
