Description from the seller
Heraldic seal matrix – ogival shape – 19th century
Beautiful solid brass seal matrix, almond-shaped (mandorle), typical of seals used by religious institutions, confraternities, or chapters from the 19th century.
The central motif depicts a shield with striped fields bearing a 'blessing hand,' a common symbol in ecclesiastical heraldry (manus Dei) and sometimes in certain congregations.
The internal border is decorated with a constellation of six-petaled flowers, carefully engraved.
The inscription in Gothic script is: SIGILLUM SANCTI MAMMETIS FRATRIENSIS AD SIMON
Which means, literally:
Seal of Saint Mammès of Fratres, to Simon
The expression Fratriensis indicates a brotherhood / confraternity / religious group.
→ For Simon, it probably indicates the dedication, the place, or an adjective attached to 'Simon'.
The reverse side shows a triangular stem, intended to be inserted into a handle that no longer exists.
The piece exhibits an old, uniform patina, with no major deterioration.
Dimensions: 4.5 cm in height x 2.8 cm in width.
Condition: excellent for a bare matrix, with an old patina and clear reliefs.
Provenance: Private collection.
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. They allow you to assess their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
