A spectacular six-panel folding screen painted in sumi-e ink on gold-ground silk, depicting a pine tree in the foreground with the rising sun in the background. Signed in the lower left corner. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. --- The byobu is in good condition, with restorations across the surface, areas of paper loss along the panel joints and on the edge and vertical humidity stains.
