Apulée, philosopher of Platonism, and the illustrated two-volume edition of l’Âne d’Or d’Apulée Philosophe Platonicien, published by Michel Brunet in 1736, bound in red morocco with marbled boards, in French, in good condition with numerous engravings including a frontispiece and decorated volumes totaling 1028 pages.
Description from the seller
Rare illustrated edition of this ancient novel Metamorphoses (or The Golden Ass) by Apuleius, a 2nd-century Platonist philosopher.
This prose narrative, both picaresque and initiatic, tells the adventures of Lucius, transformed into a donkey following a magical experience, and faced with a series of grotesque, violent, or comic trials before regaining his human form through the intervention of the goddess Isis.
This Donkey of Gold illustrates the tension between social satire, exploration of human passions, and spiritual quest, and bears witness to the French reception of Greco-Latin literatures from both a philological and moral perspective.
Apuleius - The Golden Ass by Apuleius, Platonic Philosopher - 1736 - Volumes I and II - Michel Brunet
Volume I: 536 pages, Volume II: 492 pages.
Good condition of the bindings, books in their full marbled basane from the period, signs of use, damaged headbands, rounded corners, red edges, ornately tooled spine with raised bands, gilded titles and volume numbers on red morocco pieces, cold stamped borders framing the covers.
Good interior condition, browning, attractive headbands, beautiful initial letters, tailpieces, works enriched with fine engravings outside the text including on the frontispiece, marbled endpapers.
